Who we are

Oskie the Nomster (“Oskie”, “we”) is a dinner-planning app for iPhone, with a website for managing recipes. This policy covers the app, that website and this one. Questions go to support@getoskie.com.

What we keep, and why

Your account

Your email address, a username, your display name and your password. The password is stored only as a one-way scrambled version (a hash), so no one, including us, can read it. We use your email to verify your account and to reset your password, and for nothing else.

Your household

The household’s name, who’s in it, and pending invites. Everyone in a household sees the same recipes, plans and grocery list. That’s the point of a household, so only invite people you want to share with.

Recipes and plans

Recipes you add (name, times, servings, ingredients, steps, timers, tags, and the link and photo link of the page it came from), the dinners planned for each night, your usual cooking and bedtime hours, pantry staples, and ideas you’ve marked “Not for us”. We use them to pick dinners and build your grocery list.

How long cooking really takes

When you cook with Oskie, it saves how long prep and cooking took, and who cooked. After a few cooks, Oskie plans with your real times instead of the recipe’s.

Your calendar (only if you allow it)

If you give Oskie calendar access, the app reads the calendars you choose on your phone and sends our server only the start and end times of events for the next week, so dinner can fit around them. Event titles, places, notes and attendees never leave your phone. All-day events are ignored. You can choose which calendars count, or turn this off, in the app’s Settings, or remove access in iOS Settings.

Signed-in devices

For each device you sign in on: its name (like “Sam’s iPhone”), the kind of device, and when it was last used, so you can see and sign out your devices.

What stays on your phone

• Your grocery list in Reminders. Oskie adds items to the Reminders list you choose. That happens on your phone; we don’t see your other reminders.
• Dinner alerts. Start-by and planning reminders are scheduled on your phone.
• Offline copies of recipes you’ve opened, so you can cook without a connection.

What we don’t do

• No advertising, no ad networks, and no tracking across other apps or websites.
• No analytics tools in the app or on this website.
• We never sell your information or share it for marketing.

Other companies involved

A few services help run Oskie. Each only gets what it needs for its job:

• Fly.io runs our server and stores its database, in the United States.
• Tigris (storage connected to Fly.io) holds our backups. Every backup is encrypted before it leaves our server.
• Resend sends account emails (verification and password resets): it gets your email address and the message.
• Cloudflare hosts this website and runs the “are you human?” check on sign-up.

Recipe websites

When you add a recipe from a link, your phone opens that page directly, the same as visiting it in Safari. Recipe photos, and the photos on “New ideas for you”, load straight from the recipe’s website. Those sites see an ordinary visit from your device, under their own privacy policies. Oskie doesn’t send them anything about you. To find new ideas, our server also reads a few recipe websites once a day; that involves no information about you at all.

How long we keep it

We keep your information while your account exists. When you delete your account, it’s removed from our database straight away. Encrypted backups are kept for up to a year, so a copy can remain in an old backup until that backup is deleted. Backups are only ever used to recover from a failure.

Your choices

• Delete your account in the app under Settings. If you’re the last person in your household, the household and its recipes and plans are deleted too.
• Get a copy of your information, or ask us to correct it, by emailing support@getoskie.com.
• Calendar access can be turned off at any time in the app’s Settings or in iOS Settings.

Depending on where you live, you may have more rights over your information (for example under the GDPR or California law). Email us and we’ll help.

Children

Oskie is made for the grown-ups who cook dinner. It isn’t meant for children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect their information. If you think a child has made an account, tell us and we’ll delete it.

Security

Everything between the app and our server is encrypted (HTTPS). Passwords are stored as hashes, backups are encrypted, and access to the server is limited to us.

Changes

If this policy changes, we’ll update the date at the top. If a change affects how your information is used, we’ll tell you in the app before it takes effect.
